The ball mill is a tumbling mill that uses steel balls as the grinding media. The length of the cylindrical shell is usually 11.5 times the shell diameter . The feed can be dry, with less than 3% moisture to minimize ball coating, or slurry containing 2040% water by weight.
A ball mill is a type of grinder used to grind or blend materials for use in mineral dressing processes, paints, pyrotechnics, ceramics, and selective laser sintering. It works on the principle of impact and attrition: size reduction is done by impact as the balls drop from near the top of the shell.
This size reduction is almost always carried out in two successive steps; coarse crushing followed by fine grinding . Dry crushing is seldom carried below about ½ in. particle size, experience having shown that the breaking of material beyond this point is more satisfactorily accomplished by wet methods.
Ball milling will result in a ball curve particle size distribution with one or more peaks. Screening may be required to remove over or undersized materials. Download the Grinding and Classification flyer here
