The test is suitable for soils containing no more than 30% by mass of particles retained on the 20 mm test sieve, which may include some particles retained on the 37.5 mm test sieve. The test uses the same cylindrical mold as the one employed in the California Bearing Ratio test. Table 10.3 presents the details of this test. The test displays obvious similarities with the Proctor test: compaction is carried out in layers in a cylindrical mold.
